Safety guidelines for portable rechargeable battery and cell phone collection:

Don't throw away rechargeable batteries or used cell phones! Recycle them!

All personnel must be familiar with the safety rules.

  • RBRC recycles Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-M H), Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), and *Small Sealed Lead (Pb) batteries found in cellular and cordless phones, cordless power tools, laptop computers, PDAs, two-way radios, camcorders and remote control toys. Alkaline, lithium or non-rechargeable batteries are not accepted for recycling.

  • RBRC accepts all cell phone makes and models. Phones must be deactivated prior to depositing into box.

  • Battery Warning: Loose batteries placed incorrectly in this collection box could short-circuit and cause fires. Used rechargeable batteries may have a residual charge that could cause a dangerous short-circuit. Before placing loose batteries into this collection box, you must either (1) place each battery individually into a separate plastic bag, or (2) cover the terminals of each battery completely with plastic or non-conductive electrical tape. If the battery or cell phone will not fit into the plastic bags that have been provided, you must cover the terminals of the battery completely with plastic, non-conductive electrical tape before placing it into the collection box. Shipping batteries that have not been properly packaged to prevent short-circuits and fires is a violation of Federal law and may result in substantial civil and criminal penalties.

  • Place the battery and cellular collection box in a monitored location. The box should be within easy reach of properly trained personnel.

  • While rechargeable batteries are normally safe to handle, they do contain materials that may have vented due to misuse during the life of the battery. If the battery appears to be dirty or to have a white powdery substance around the terminal, exercise caution when handling the battery. Do not touch the dirty area.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water if they itch. Place the battery and cell phone in a plastic bag before placing them in the collection box.

  • Do not attempt to discharge the rechargeable battery by short-circuiting the terminals.

  • Do not accept wet batteries. Batteries should be dry before being placed into the box.

  • Do not accept alkaline, lithium or non-rechargeable batteries..

  • Do not overfill the battery and cellular collection box. When the box is full, secure the flaps on the box and prepare a new box.

  • Exercise caution when handling a collection box filled with batteries and cell phones. It may cause personal injury if dropped.

  • In the event a battery and cellular phone collection box breaks and releases batteries and cell phones, place the spilled batteries and cell phones into a new collection box.
